HOW TO PROTECT YOUR SKIN

Here are our top tips for staying safer in the sun:

• Stay out of the sun when it is at its strongest, usually between 11 a.m. and 3.p.m. If you have to be out in the sun during this time, cover up with light, cotton clothes and wear a high SPF sun lotion.

• Try and find a lotion or cream that is designed for ‘sensitive skin’ as many people find that sun protection creams irritate their skin.

• Don’t use lotions kept from last year, they lose their ability to work as well. You need new sunscreen every year.

• Wear a hat! Your head can burn very easily and for anyone who colours their hair, the sun exposure can turn your hair a very unattractive shade!

• If you take certain types of medicine such as antibiotics check with your doctor before you go out in the sun – certain medicines can make your skin even more sensitive to the sun.

• It is very important that you do not let yourself burn – sunburn increases the risk of melanoma, a major cause of skin cancer. It is also VITAL that you drink water regularly throughout the day to stay hydrated. It stands to sense – if you are running around in the mid-day sun wearing shorts or a bikini and with no sunscreen, you will burn very badly and may even suffer from sunstroke. Following our guidelines above will ensure you stay safe in the sun.

• Wear a SUN SCREEN!
